Kathy Lian, co-founder of Bktraders and author of Prop Trading Secrets, conducted a measure of the development, challenges and prospects of proprietary trade in an interview with financial tycoon Jeff Patterson. “Reconnecting with industry peers and providers is valuable,” Lian said, highlighting the importance of industry dialogue in the change in the proprietary trade environment.
She pointed out that this energy reflects the motivation of the prop trading itself. “Props trading is a relatively new space, but overwhelming interest reflects its rapid expansion. Both traders and companies are eager to understand what the industry is next.”
Despite the existence of proprietary transactions in various forms for decades, its current avatar (marked with online funded accounts, global retail access and gamified evaluation model) has exploded over the past three years. But the road is not going well.
“The growth we’re seeing mainly happened in the last three years,” Lian said. “But it’s not without challenges – regulatory crackdowns, technological disruptions and lockdowns have forced the industry to adapt quickly.”

“The most successful businessmen focus on mastering one tool,” she explained. “Whether it’s gold, Nasdaq or another market, they’re not sparse in multiple assets until the transaction becomes second nature.”
This is based on discipline-based advice, and lian traits believe that market competitiveness and growth in expectations for traders are crucial.

In terms of regulation, supervision remains unbalanced. The U.S. Commodity Futures Trade Commission (CFTC) has shown interest in the field, but any recent law enforcement may slow down due to political considerations.
“European regulators are also paying close attention,” Lian added. “So, we may see the international framework first.”
