Behind the idea: genie ai

Co-founded Nitish Mutha and Rafie Faruq During UCL, Genie AI used AI agents to help users draft, review and negotiate legal documents based on their own terms.

This product has come a long way from the early attention of law firms. Today, it is a self-service platform used by more than 130,000 businesses and includes Khosla Adventure and Google Ventures.

In this week Behind the idea We talked with Mutha about the transition from a software engineer to a legal technology founder, how Genie AI rethinks how legal work is done and what the platform is next.

Genie AI aims to provide anyone with the ability to independently draft, review and negotiate legal agreements. We have agents who represent users to handle complex legal work, which greatly reduces barriers to entry to the use of legal documents.

What problems did your company solve?

It is unfair to obtain legal services. People with deep pockets can provide the best lawyer support for doing business, but every business on earth must interact with legal agreements to operate. There are usually no clear measures of legal service quality. Businesses often pay large billable expenses for time-consuming, rather than paying for actual work done.

How has your company grown since its launch?

Throughout the journey, we made mistakes, gathered valuable learning, and developed greatly in the process. In the early days, we focused on large law firms to build an AI product that would help draft legal agreements better and faster. However, we learned that we are just gears in an ancient and slow system that limits our ability to have a significant industry impact. We then focus our business hub on end users and give self-service legal services with AI assistance.

This year, we mature our core technology by building a rich, powerful AI native editor that allows our AI agents to modify documents directly on your behalf while stumble on your side to approve suggested changes, a huge technological advancement that can provide advanced solutions for our customers. We have also built a diverse, talented team that has strongly transformed the legal industry.

What is the biggest challenge or the most “toughest moment” to overcome?

We have deliberately positioned our products and business as a wide range of products and businesses, attracting users from a variety of business backgrounds. This poses a challenge in ensuring we provide a high-quality service that is useful to everyone and proves to be useful to everyone. Additionally, AI capabilities are often available now, making innovation and distinction between our product solutions and other providers more challenging.

What is your greatest achievement or “most proudest moment” so far?

We have established an agent legal document editor that has expanded to serve over 130,000 trusted companies. Before we started generating revenue, we raised $20 million from Khosla Ventures and Google Ventures. We won the Sunday Times Best Place to Work Award, which we often rank among the top AI startups we watch in the legal space in the startup category.

How do you describe the culture of a company?

We are driven, ambitious people who believe in the boundaries of taking risks and pushing innovation. We believe that everyone has an equal voice and encourage every team member to be proactive, self-manage and be as autonomous as possible. We promote continuous improvement and learning while ensuring people challenge to express their best.

What storage will be available in the future?

The future is infinite. We aim to provide a fully autonomous legal AI agent for businesses that not only handle complex legal tasks, but also perform complex legal workflows, understand your company and provide personalized services.
